Chapter Twelve

“I know a short cut,” Connor said.

Brianna pointed to a paved walkway. “Everyone else is over there.”

“This way avoids the tourists.”

She shrugged and followed him toward a narrow opening in a stand of pines and oaks.

The deeper into the woods, the cooler and more beautiful it was, yet this was certainly not a public access path.

She stepped over thick tree roots and around rocks, nearly slipping twice trying to match Connor’s long stride.

He marched up the path like a man on a mission, glancing back only once.

Something was different about him this morning, and she wasn’t sure she liked it.

What had happened to change him into this cold fish?

Connor’s pace picked up when they came to a smooth plateau.

She stopped to catch her breath. “Would you slow down a little? I can’t keep up.”

He kept going. “Only a little farther.”

What was Mister Personality’s problem? Couldn’t he at least give her the courtesy of looking over his shoulder?

His ‘little farther’ took new meaning as she stood at the base of a sharp rise at least ten feet high. Thinking for sure he’d help her up, Brianna fumed as she watched Connor’s backside disappear over the ridge.

She hadn’t dressed for mountain climbing and had no interest in scaling this rock pile.

But she wasn’t about to let him get the best of her, either.

Looking up to the top, she shielded the sun from her eyes with one hand as she batted away gnats.

If he’d climbed it, she could too. Too bad Connor’s stride was twice hers.

She plotted a path and where she’d put each foot along the way. The first two steps were easy and the pitch wasn’t that steep. She’d do this. No problem.

She’d show Connor, wherever he was. At least no one was following her and snapping photos. She was certain her backside was not in a flattering pose. What excellent fodder for her friends to plaster over social media.

It wasn’t long until the gradual incline turned nasty. She struggled to get a foothold on the mossy stones, slipping once and smacking her ankle on a rock.

Say hello to some serious pain.

She grabbed at a branch to steady her footing.

While she wobbled on uncertain ground, Brianna’s anger boiled.

She’d had about all she could take of this short-cut stuff. Why hadn’t he followed everyone else up the nice paved path?

Was he trying to prove something?

Or leave her in the woods to die?

That was stupid. What would he gain from that, especially after going to all the trouble of the big reveal last night?

Once on even ground, her resolve married fury. She stomped her way toward where the path took a sharp right turn.

If Connor Ford thought this was funny, it wasn’t. And she would tell him about it, once she found him.

Leaves rustled in a branch above her and she jumped. What was she expecting? A werewolf? Bigfoot?

“Don’t even think about it, who or whatever you are.” She glanced up but saw nothing. “Go about your business.”

The branches moved as something flew away.
